The Zeni Mill

The Zeni Mill

In Brentonico, an old mill still perfectly functioning

Of the more than 1,000 historic mills on the Trentino territory used to grind grain, the Zeni Mill is one of the few still in perfect working order.

Fundamental to the rural economy, the "Vitruvian" millstone mill could be found almost everywhere in the valleys of Trentino, at small and large watercourses. Of the more than a thousand mills that could be counted in this area around the 19th century, the Zeni Mill, erected in 1806 by the Balista Family, is the only one with hydraulic power still in operation in the Sorna Valley. Some 20 mills, forges and sawmills were water-powered here in the 19th century. The mill was purchased by the Zeni Family in 1906.

The Zeni Mill is equipped with a large cassette wheel and a smaller iron wheel, also with cassettes It was once used, mainly for milling flour especially corn but also flour for bread i for local poultry farming, in recent years it has been activated again for grain milling.
Recently restored, this small mill, is fully functional and open for visits (reservation required).
